STUD KFS // God in the school

  • Fredens Kirke

Which place should God have in the school? On first row among the geeks? Or pushed down on the back row where none really notice him?

The opinions of which role religion should play in the school are many - in Denmark we do one thing and in France they do something else. And even inside the borders, there is far between the wings.
This night we will look further on and discuss the strategies that can lay under discussions about the role of religion in the school. We will dive down in the concept intellectual freedom and discuss whether there should be a limit to tolerance.

The night will be facilitated as short presentations mixed with table talks, where we will share experiences and knowledge about the topic.

STUD KFS // The "true" christianity

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Thomas Frovin, coordinator at Areopagos
We have an tendency to think that christianity it its western expression, is the most correct way of christianity. But the truth is that soon there will be more Christians in Africa, South America and Asia than in the old christian west and that these new christian cultures have a very different way of practicing their christian faith.

How should we relate to these new Christian expressions and what can we learn from christianity in the global south?

STUD KFS // C.S. Lewis, the myth and the truth of christianity

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Bent Bjerring
Pastor at Amagerbro Frikirke

C.S. Lewis had a fairly unique approach in the presentation and defense of Christianity, which was characterized by his desire to let reason and imagination go hand in hand. This desire had its source in his special understanding of myths, where he saw Christianity as a "myth that had become a fact."

Welcome to an evening where Bent Bjerring will lead us into CS Lewis' universe and where we will look into "the myth that became a fact."

STUD KFS // Dinner with meaning

  • Fredens Kirke

Come and enjoy a good meal and have a conversation about the important questions - with inspiration from the modern monasticism L'Abri.

In 1955 Francis Schaeffer founded the L'Abri community in Switzerland, where it is possible to study and seek answers to the big questions. Since then it has spread to several places in Europe, Asia and America.

The concept is simple: We eat together in smaller groups. The conversation at the table begins with the first person who has a question. One conversation at the time.

Some atheists are good at pointing critique at the christians and Christian faith. We welcome the critique and would like to have a good talk and dialogue. But this evening we give “the server” to a Christian apologist who will point out some weak spots at the atheistic worldview.

STUD KFS // In remembrence of me

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Christoffer Højlund
Pastor at Fyns valgmenighed

This evening will focus on the sacraments with a narrative approach. Based on the story of the Israelites exodus of Egypt with focus on the trip through the Red Sea as the decisive action of God, separating God's people from slavery. From here a line to baptism; God has made a decisive action that once and for all separated us from everything that tries to impose on us their power (society, trends, sin, desires, etc.). Jesus repeats and reinforces the same theme in the sacrament.

STUD KFS // Julegudstjeneste for studerende

  • Apostelkirken

For many students Christmas also equals the exam period.

You are probably sitting and spelling your way through Habermas’ public sphere theory. Maybe you are just finishing your paper on plate tectonics and soil conditions in the Orient. Or maybe you are choking on Slavic languages’ phonetic challenges.

No matter what, it is liberating with an imminent celebration where it is possible to just stop up.

Most have tried to attend church at Christmas eve and whether you agree on the minister’s sermon or not, you experience that we are all gathered around something. This is the idea behind this Christmas service: to gather students in Copenhagen in order to welcome Christmas.

The actual service will resemble what you know from the Danish Lutheran Church, but students will be running it.

After the service, snacks will be served and you can wish each other a merry Christmas.

We hope to see a lot of you!

Best regards

What our culture can learn from the Christian monastic movement

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Martin Drengsgaard, vicar in Betlehemskirken

The monastic movement was (and is) a religious community that in a special way made room for God by shutting out the world. At the same time monasteries were centers of research worked as hospitals. A community which today may seem mysterious and sometimes mythic. What's the story behind the Christian monastic movement, and has the movement is in fact stalled? What can we as a students in 2017 learn from these powerhouses of spiritual wisdom and insight?

When two genders are not enough

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Carsten Elmelund Pedersen, senior lecturer of Systematic Theology

In recent years a heated debate about the perception of gender and sexuality has risen. For example illustrated by the Danish documentary serial "when two genders are not enough" - where a number of people who fall outside the normal “man” / “woman” definitions are interviewed and tell their story. How should we respond to this sensitive and complicated issue that raises a number of questions, both theological, humanly and perhaps personally. An evening with both a talk and plenty of time for conversation.

Do we have to take the creation literally? Is it a myth? Jens Bruun Kofoed has written a book to students on the subjects and will give his answers to these questions. His starting point will be his book ”King, priest and gartner- Human in God’s world”.

War and Church history

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Carsten Selch Jensen, senior lecturer in Theology at KU.

This evening we examine and debate the Church's attitude to war. In periods of church history soldiers had to undergo certain cleansing rituals when they came home from the war, while at other times, for example during the crusades, it has been a sacred duty to go to war. What is the reason for such different views?
What is the church's view on war today? Can / should a Christian participate in a war? Is there a difference between attacking and defending, and how you distinguish between these two?
As always, there will be time to debate and talk about these complicated questions.

Christian, poststructuralist and feminist

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Julie Thingmann Christensen, studying Education on KU

How can you as a Christian navigate with a “realistic world view” when you are suddenly studying humaniora and learning from Foucault that our reality is changing and constructed? Does it still make sense to talk about truth - take the Bible for example?
What can I do when I want to use Foucault and different feministic strategic analyses in my study assignments when I am in doubt whether it is the truth about the world?

Are you critical enough to believe?

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Jakob V. Olsen, senior lecturer in religion philosophy

One might have the feeling, that a new critique of religion has risen these past few years, but criticizing religion is far from a new discipline.

Through most of our European history, examples can be found of people and organisations that have debated, criticized and protested religion.

Therefore we will spend this evening understanding this critique. Both by investigating its history and key figures and by looking at the critique that is raised today.

And - we will off course look at the answers and arguments that Christianity has given and gives to this critique today.

As always there will be time for Q&A, debate and talk.

Stress and another story

  • Fredens Kirke

Speaker: Kristian Kappel, KFS staff member and cand. theol.

"30 percent of all Danish students are stressed out all or a large part of the time. Nearly 8 out of 10 are stressed out in connection with the exam, while about 40 percent are stressed because of the studies in general" - This is the conclusion from the Danish Magisterforening after a major study in 2016.
Apparently there is something in the public narrative of progress, freedom, free competition and globalization that makes it very difficult to find rest. But how does this story that society tells students today really look - and it is possible to challenge it / tell a different and less stressful story of how the world is?

What is your God? Martin Luther in conversation with Tim Keller

Speaker: Louise Høgild, bach. theol. and working in Lutheran Mission.

In the book “Not all that glitters is God” author Timothy Keller discusses the typical idols of late modern. Keller is inspired by Martin luther in his view of idols, but there are big differences in the idols highlighted by the two theologians.
Both Luther and Keller defines an idol in relationship to the heart and not the object itself. The important thing is what your heart is focused on. That means that everything can become an idol, even that which is originally good and willed by God.
Learn more about idols in the understanding of Kellers and Luther and idols in our society today and join the debate and conversation.

Freedom and commitment - Christian Ethics according to Bonnhoeffer and Luther

Speaker: Hans-Christian Vindum Petterson, Ma in theology and KFS staff worker

Is there such a thing as Christian ethics and , if so, what is the basis and the main features of it? Both the reformatory main character, Martin Luther (1483-1546) and the German theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) believed that Christian ethics exist and wrote about it. This evening we will look at questions like: What is the foundation of Christian ethics and what are its main features? We will also look at some examples from the literary works of Luther and Bonhoeffer and discuss what it means for the western church today.

When the view of God and of the world Crashes, and life is in ruins

  • Nazaret Church

Speaker: Dr. theol. and Professor in new testament Peter V. Legarth

The writer Jacob Paludan says that when Jørgen Stein came in mortal danger on a raft, he had to realize that the cozy God whom he had met in school, did not help him. Many people in crisis situations had similar experiences of disappointment and defeat in the faith of God; that includes myself. Faith should be a help, but it wasn’t. If God is a reality, then why isn’t he when everything breaks down? What's wrong?
